01/31/2014 - Question 1

Georgia Charter School Association

Question 1

What do you believe the K-12 education system in Georgia should look like 10 years from now?

Nancy Jester
... and Louisiana also spend less per pupil. So, what we're getting, we deserve a vastly better return on investment. We don't have a money problem, we have an alignment problem.

I look forward to talking about the next question, how I would realign the department of education to yield better results for kids and taxpayers. But, what it would look like, decentralization, more opportunities for kids, more choices for parents and more charter schools. We have to be much further down the road to educational freedom. Some of our other states have gotten there. It was great to have Amendment 1 passed. That was a great first step, but we have longer to go down that road.

I would institute a financial integrity system, much like the state of Texas has. We have zero markers for financial integrity in the state of Georgia and the way we spend our educational dollars. Texas has 20. Those 20 indicators are driving money into the classroom, away from bureaucracy, and they are keeping costs low while increasing results for kids.

I would institute achievement districts like they have in Tennessee. In 10 years I want Georgia to attract business because of rather than in spite of our education system. We have an 8-track system and in 10 years, I want it to be an iPod system.
