02/25/2014 - Common Core

Dawson County GOP - Georgia State Superintendent Candidate Forum

Benita Dodd (Georgia Public Policy Foundation)
What is on the other side of Common Core?

Ashley Bell
Anything from the federal government comes with strings and sometimes it comes with chains. If I see strings or chains, I'm going to say it's not in the best interest of our children.

There are a lot of similarities to GPS, so we could revert back to that. Getting rid of Common Core doesn't take us to where we want to be. Our social studies curriculum in K-5 would make Che Guevara happy. We don't teach the Bill of Rights in our current GPS. GPS does include LBJ and Cesar Chavez. Our standards need to be transparent and locally controlled. If Common Core is great then why can't we go to the mathematics standards for Massachusetts, they're better? With 17 states pulling out of the assessments, we can't use Common Core to compare. We need strong standards, but it must be developed locally.

Fitz Johnson. We need rigorous standards set by people in Georgia. We've spent a lot of money on Common Core, so take it out and dump it out, that's not going to happen. Let's use the good parts of Common Core.

Richard Woods We have to make sure we control Common Core. The Common Core standads are copyright protected. We have to own the horse.
